Why We Use Acrylic For Aquariums?
We are often asked why we use acrylic instead of glass for our aquariums and fish tanks. Simply put, Acrylic is perfectly suited to make large scale aquariums, its properties and manufacturing methods allow for much greater flexibility of design, without the risks associated with Glass. Here are some benefits:
- Acrylic is much stronger than glass (bulletproof shields are made from acrylic).
- Acrylic aquariums are clearer than glass aquariums.
- Constructed acrylic aquariums weigh 48% less than their glass counterparts.
- Scratches can be polished out of an acrylic surface, glass scratches are permanent.
- Insulating properties of acrylic are superior to that of glass, allowing for a “greener” aquarium solution.
- Acrylic aquariums can be seamlessly made to any size, so let your imagination run wild.
Is Acrylic Safe For Aquarium Use?
Acrylic is one of the most safest materials for constructing aquariums provided you are using the correct type and thickness for the size of your desired project. Not only is acrylic an essential choice for large scale custom built aquariums, but it’s also the lightest and generally cheaper choice when compared to using glass.
Still unconvinced? then ask yourself this: Why do 99% of public aquariums use acrylic for their exhibits?
Acrylic is perfectly suited for aquariums too large for glass. We specialise in equipping Zoos, Theme parks, Hotels, Businesses, Schools, Exhibitions and a multitude of private clients looking for a certain special something for their home. We pride ourselves on quality, and suitability. Aquarium Masters have more than 20 years of experience to ensure the perfection of your aquarium. You will not be disappointed.
Which is better: Acrylic or glass?
Whilst to some degree, personal preference may prevail, the two main materials used in the manufacturing process of aquariums is “Glass” or “Acrylic”. Something we are asked often is - What is better for building aquariums? Both glass and acrylic are clear, they both hold small and large amounts of water and happily house fish safely. The pro’s and con’s of both materials come into question when it comes to design, shape and size of your project as well as the importance of manoeuvrability.
The cost of Glass vs Acrylic
The cost of both glass and acrylic changes over time, but generally, we’ve noticed that smaller aquariums are cheaper made from ‘glass’ - it’s just cheaper and more readily available. Supply and demand is simply higher, which results in lower prices. Acrylic on the other hand, can of course be used if desired. large custom aquariums are cheaper made from ‘acrylic’ - this is because the weight of acrylic in comparison to glass is far lighter - thus requiring less work-hours and shipping / manufacturing costs.
